Top Tips Dressing for the Holidays: Men
It’s the holiday season again, and that means making sure you dress the part. For men, if you’re attached, then most likely you have your partner to help you dress—or tell you what you can and cannot wear! But sometimes you may want to decide on your swag for yourself. And if you are single, you may simply appreciate some guidance. Well, Silver Sage is here to help you out with our top tips for male Yuletide fashion. Whether you are attending the annual end-of-the-year party at work, a family Thanksgiving dinner, or any other holiday get-together over the next month or two, these tidbits of advice should make you feel great and look dashing.
Tip 1: Overdress, Not Underdress. As with our advice to the ladies, it’s always better to dress up, rather than attend a function looking like you’re ready to go to the grocery store. You will feel much better if you are the best-turned-out man at the party instead of cowering in the corner because you came in sneakers and sweatpants.
Tip 2: Long-Sleeved Shirt. Men cannot go wrong with a long-sleeved, button-down shirt, regardless of geographic location. Short-sleeved shirts are simply not as dressy this time of year.
Tip 3: Keep the Shirt Color Simple. There is nothing more elegant for a man than a crisp, white dress shirt, whether button-down or not. If not white, keep the color toned-down (e.g., light blue, grey) or a simple pattern like low-key stripes. Save the plaids for another day.
Tip 4: Dress Slacks Key. If you’re attending a party or event of any kind, leave the jeans at home and pull on a nice pair of dress slacks. During the holidays, the best pants will be darker colors: black, brown, or dark grey. Leave the khakis for another time. But by all means, find something comfortable that makes you feel good.
Tip 5: Accessories Abound. Men often don’t think about accessories, but neckties, socks, belts, and jewelry are all ways for guys to put a little jazz in their attire. Colorful neckties or socks, even those with Rudolph or Santa on them, are a fun way to add pizzazz. Belts and shoes should typically match and complement the color of your pants, but feel free to experiment with options that may be a bit more showy than what you typically wear to work. Have some bling? Put it on for the holidays. Cufflinks, rings, and tie clasps, and even (if you are daring) earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, are all perfect accessories for the festivities.
Tip 6: Jackets Always Work. We recommend always having a sport jacket at hand. A nice simple, dark-colored sport jacket or blazer can make any outfit look a bit more dressy, just in case the event you are attending is a bit less casual than you expected. If you don’t need it, it’s easy enough to leave in the car or drape it over a chair.
Tip 7: Check for Stains. Too many times we’ve seen men who have stains in the most uncomfortable places, if you know what we mean. This is especially important for seasonal clothing that may have been put away without cleaning. Check your clothes before the last minute and make sure there are no spots or stains—especially on the ties, shirts, and pants.
As a Silver Sager, go out and dress up, and have some fun this holiday season!
