Silver Lining at the Golden Globes
It was quite a night at the Golden Globes this year for Silver Sagers!
The first Golden Globe Awards were held in 1944. That year, Jennifer Jones was awarded Best Actress for her role in The Song of Bernadette, (which received the Best Film award) and Paul Lukas won Best Actor laurels for Watch on the Rhine. Winners that year were presented with a scroll. Today’s winners are presented a statuette made from brass, zinc, and bronze and which weighs nearly eight pounds.
As our world ages and the viewing audience grows more mature (in years if not necessarily in behavior), the television and film industries are responding by offering television series and movies that reflect this wise and wonderful population. Let’s see what transpired with the winners at the 76th Golden Globe Awards last week.
Best Motion Picture – Drama takes us back to the 1970s and ’80s with Bohemian Rhapsody and the legendary band, Queen. Although just shy of a Silver Sager at 37, Rami Malek won for Best Actor in this movie and did an outstanding job rocking Freddie Mercury.
Silver Sager Glenn Close (71) brought home the Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for her role in The Wife as the devoted spouse of a man about to receive the Nobel Prize for literature—except that it was she who wrote all of his books. No coincidence that the screenplay was written by the 65-years-wise American actress, director, screenwriter, and playwright Jane Anderson.
At forty-four, British actor Christian Bale won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance as Dick Cheney in Vice, an engrossing film exploring Cheney’s tempestuous time in the White House. The star-studded Silver Sage cast includes Amy Adams (45), Steve Carell (57) as Donald Rumsfeld, Sam Rockwell (51) as George W. Bush, and LisaGay Hamilton (55) shining as Condoleezza Rice.
Green Book took the win for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Set in the 1960s and based on the true story of black classical pianist Don Shirley and his white driver Tony Vallelonga’s unique professional and personal relationship, this film’s Silver Sage cast includes leads Mahershala Ali (45) and Viggo Mortensen (60), as well as other notables Linda Cardellini (43), Sebastian Maniscalco (45), Dimiter D. Marinov (not sure of his age, but definitely over 40!), and Mike Hatton (41).
As Queen Anne in The Favourite, a period comedy-drama set in the early 18th century, 44-years-young Olivia Colman took complete advantage of this fabulous opportunity to earn the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The Favourite also featured Silver Sage actors Rachel Weisz (49) and James Smith (71).
Based on the novel by Maureen Orth (75), the winner for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television was The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The film follows the murder of iconic fashion designer, Gianni Versace, whose life was brutally cut short at the tender age of 50. Three of the four main characters are Silver Sagers: Édgar Ramírez (41), Ricky Martin (47), and Penélope Cruz (44).
And what could be more appropriate for our Silver Sage Magazine audience than The Kominsky Method, the new Netflix offering that won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. This series explores what it’s like for an aging actor in a town that values only youth and beauty. With an award-winning cast of twilight actors including Michael Douglas (75) (who also scored for Best Performance for an Actor in a Television Series – Muscial or Comedy), Alan Arkin (85), Nancy Travis (58), and Danny DeVito (75).
The quiet, unhurried film Roma (previously reviewed by our own Silver Sager, Jude Joseph Lovell. www.silversagemag.com/in-search-of-lost-time/) took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language. Its director, 57-year-old Alfonso Cuarón garnered Best Director – Motion Picture.
Sharp Objects, from the novel by Gillian Flynn (47), offered the opportunity in Best Performance for Supporting Role in a Series for the beautifully talented Patricia Clarkson (60) in this psychological thriller offered on HBO.
Other notable Silver Sage winners included:
Mahershala Ali (44), Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Green Book).
Sandra Oh (47), Best Performance for an Actress in a Dramatic Television Series (Killing Eve).
Regina King (47), Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (If Beale Street Could Talk)
Patricia Arquette (50), Best Performance for an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Escape at Dannemora)
So, all in all, nearly every category of the Golden Globes this year had a member of our exclusive Silver Sage club. We hope that you’ll enjoy the films and television shows that cast members of our own community. Break out the Chardonnay and a bowl of popcorn and enjoy these films and shows!
