The Old 5 & 10
by Tammy Grey
Stepping into Dick’s Old Time 5 and 10 is like stepping back into a nearly forgotten era. This Missouri landmark has called Historic Downtown Branson home for over fifty years now. Richard (Dick) and June Hartley started the business, and they ran it together until Dick’s death in 2006. The store is now run by June, their son Steve Hartley (who rejoined the company in 1993), and son-in-law Dave Montgomery (who came on board in 2008). Dick said on their website that the store had “its roots dating back to a time when there was a five-and-dime store in most American communities.”
Dick’s Old Time 5 and 10 carries over 50,000 different items, so you are sure to find almost anything you need—and a few things you didn’t know existed. Dick’s offers a wide range of craft supplies, including sewing notions, embroidery supplies, and yarn. There is an amazing selection of gifts and you’ll find the perfect present for anybody from the age of one to one hundred and one. You can even select the perfect card and wrapping paper after you’ve picked out their gift. Dick’s has all your household and linen needs covered as well. While you’re shopping, be sure and browse through aisles filled with all sorts of hardware items. Teina, a resident of Branson, summed it up perfectly: “You never know what you’re going to find while shopping at one of the few remaining five-and-dime stores left in America.”
Dick’s Old Time 5 and 10 is popular with both locals and visitors alike. In fact, it was voted Branson’s best specialty store in both 2008 and 2009. Despite all the adult shoppers that the store has annually, it is perhaps kids and grandchildren who love the store most. Aisle after aisle of toys and family games, both modern favorites and nostalgic choices, await each child. Kids of all ages will enjoy the train track suspended from the ceiling and the aircraft that seem to be flying through the store.
Despite all the thousands of items for sale at Dick’s Old Time 5 and 10, the store is perhaps best known for its candy selection. In addition to all current candy favorites, such as candy bars and salt water taffy, they have a large selection of nostalgic candy choices. Horehound candy, Kits, Candy Cigarettes, BB Bats, Slo-Pokes, and Big Hunks candy will all remind you of your youth and days gone by.
Dick’s 5 and 10 also has several collections on display. Throughout the store, you will find sports memorabilia, trains, arrowheads, aviation prints, autographed Hall of Fame Baseball portraits, and several other antiques. Steve, a visitor from Wyoming, said he could “spend all day looking at all the memorabilia in the store.”
Dick’s Old Time 5 and 10 is located at 103 West Main Street in Historic Downtown Branson, Missouri and is open all year long. For more information, visit www.Dicks5and10.com.
