Q: I’m worried about my mother moving into a long term facility and making friends. Any suggestions? Sarah D., LaSalle, Canada
A: Hi Sarah. Most facilities for older adults such as 55+ communities, independent living, assisted living and even some nursing homes have daily activities that residents can participate in. By participating in various activities, your mother will meet new people, get out of her room and make friends! I would suggest that you talk to the Director or floor manager where your mom will be living. Let them know you’d like her to be involved in fun activities. Additionally, you can get the weekly list of activities and together choose ones that she may like. Then, put the activities on a calendar that she can easily see. She (and the residence staff) will know where she should be each day so she won’t miss a fun activity or a chance to make friends. She should also make sure to take her meals in the general dining area if possible.
