As we reported earlier in an article written below, a new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reported that 34% or one-in-three 65+ year old Silver Sagers are overprescribed or inappropriately prescribed medications. Often this can lead to increased medical concerns, increased hospitalization visits and an increase in patient spending by more than $450 per year per person. Medications include those for mental health, heart disease, and other disorders. We know firsthand that if your parent or grandparent has stopped a medication, it is often up to the patient to stop the prescription. Oftentimes, physicians forget or simply do not do so and then Mom or Grandad gets the call from their local pharmacy that their drug is ready for pick up even though they no longer need it or should be taking it.
