Ever since Irma hit Florida and Puerto Rico and Harvey hit Texas, nursing homes have been ill prepared to deal with the power outages. That will change. As of November 16th, any nursing home, hospice, group home, hospital or other facility that receives Medicare and Medicaid payments must meet new federal emergency preparedness standards which will require them to have an alternate source of power to maintain safe temperatures for patient comfort and to keep food and medications from spoiling. So before checking your parents in – ask to see what alternate source of power the facility has to keep your parents safe and alive should a natural disaster occur.
