Celebrate Healthy Aging® Month – September
The Healthy Aging Campaign was established back in 1997. Now more than 20 years later September is officially Healthy Aging® Month which provides hope, inspiration and wellness for adults, ages 45-plus in terms of their physical, emotional, social, and financial well-being. Today there are more than 76 million adults over the age of 50 and the first of the Generation Xers (82 million strong) reached that achievement in 2015.
The myths of aging need to be debunked. Getting older is a privilege and an honor. Those facial lines you have were spent on the countless hours wondering and worrying if your children were okay or if you could pay your bills that month. The silver and grey hairs are locks of honor to have survived the Great Depression, World War II, and Kennedy Assassination, 9-11 and other difficult historical events around the world. You have born witness to amazing accomplishments throughout history (since 1930’s) including the first Moon Landing, first Female in Space, air travel, cellular phones and personal computers and so many other worldwide accomplishments. September is the opportunity to celebrate yourself. We have a few suggestions on how to do just that:
Stay Positive. Surround yourself with people who bring positive energy to your life and create some distance with those who seem to complain about everything. We have survived more than a pandemic so let us focus on the positive.
Stay Moving. Study after study demonstrates that exercise is essential for a healthy body and brain. It also lifts one’s mood as well so walk, run or skip if you can.
Stay Healthy. From your teeth to your toes make sure that you take care of each body part. In fact, good oral hygiene is an essential to one’s overall well-being so take care of your pearly whites. Foot care can keep you on your feet and moving so indulge with a pedicure or foot massage when you can. Visit your doctor’s regularly for annual check ups and health screenings.
Stay Social. Whether you are connecting virtually or in person, maintaining social connections is vital to our overall wellbeing.
What are you doing to celebrate Healthy Aging® Month?
